Mâcon Millly-Lamartine Blanc 2006
ABOUT THIS WINE: This wine is sourced from prime Chardonnay vineyards that sit on south-facing slopes amid the rolling hills that surround the village of Milly-Lamartine. This is the southern end of Burgundy, which means more sun and warmth than other areas of the region, making for broader, richer styles of wine. This great-value little number is no exception, with its aromas of ripe peach and apple, and a deft touch of creamy texture on the palate.
Winemaker Georges Brichon is something of a local celebrity, having studied just a few miles down the road, then worked 20 vintages in the region, and a habitual collector of awards along the way. He's put together a wine for us that shows excellent concentration for the price. It also has excellent balance and freshness - Georges doesn't use any oak to make this wine - and reflects a stylish take on modern white Burgundy. Enjoy this with roast chicken and bread sauce.

Château de Balan Bordeaux 2006
ABOUT THIS WINE: While Bordeaux is perhaps best known for it's grand wines and châteaux, it's true to say that at the cheaper end of the scale, it's not always been easy to find good quality wines that offer value for money. But competition from the New World and ever more discerning wine drinkers have led a number of producers in Bordeaux to up their game and get on with the business of making great value wines with classic character.
Château Balan is one of them - the 23-hectare property is run by charming couple Michel and Danielle Jeans, along with Danielle's sister. The vineyard sits on the banks of the Ciron River, a tributary of the Garonne, not too far from the famous sweet wine area of Sauternes. But red is the speciality at Balan, as we can see here from this blackcurrant spicy red. Ideal with roast beef and all the trimmings.
