A family owned estate proudly leading the field in vinous research and education, Masi would have to be on the short list of any Italian wine lover. A wine borne from modernising and revitalising traditions rather than stamping them out.

Tasting Notes : This wine beats the labels off almost everything at this price, for its bitter cherry fruit, balance and Italian style.

Producer : Masi

Method of Production : The grapes originated from the best vineyards in the Classico area at the heart of the Valpolicella region. Harvested at full ripeness, the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara were vinified separately. Fermentation lasted 20 days at 20-22°C (cool for reds), the skins only stayed with the juice for 13 days leaving the wine pale in colour, aromatic and light-bodied. The wine was matured in large oak casks for one year.

Goodness...

Every time I sold a bottle of this, I assumed it was pretty standard, reliable fayre from a big producer, like an Italian Hardy's...how wrong I was! This smacked me in the mouth with full, developed flavours the moment I opened it and poured a drop, unlike some Italian reds which remain closed until they've breathed heavily. Perfectly balanced tannins combine with smokey redfruit on the palate.

Just had a sample of this wine. For its age, it is extremely mature. Rivals 1997 Nebbiolos. I'm thinking of stocking up on this delicious wine and enjoying it during Kerry's re-election.
