With striking aromas of warm herbs, ripe dark fruit and black pepper, this heart-warming southern French red is delicious either on its own or as an accompaniment for delicately-flavoured dishes
ABOUT THIS WINE: History has it that Saint Saturnin was the first bishop of Toulouse, having been sent out from Greece to preach the Gospel to the Gauls, and died at the hands of the local pagans after being dragged around the town by a bull.
OK, so it's maybe not the best story to tell while you're drinking this wine with a fillet steak, but it's a bit of historybehind this unique and tiny wine region that sits at the foot of the Larzac highlands in the Languedoc area of southern France. It's a hot, dry place not far from the Mediterranean, and the reds made here are correspondingly warm-fruited and generous in style. This is a versatile and moreish style of wine that would be equally at home partnering a tuna niçoise or shepherd's pie.
