d'Arenberg 'The Custodian' Grenache

During the 1980's, d'Arenberg resisted taking part in a Grenache vine pull scheme that proved to be shortsighted. Their faith in the old vines has proved rewarding, with d'Arenberg receiving the mantle as 'Custodian' of the Grenache variety.

Tasting Notes : Dense concentrated spice and distinctive dark fruits with liquorice and mulberries all feature on the nose. The palate has more mulberry and Satsuma plum and spice flavours plus a rising level of fruit sweetness which is then controlled with a savoury element of liquorice, earth-iron characters, potpourri and dark black fruits on the finish.

Method of Production : Made from bush and trellised vines yielding small quantities of immensely concentrated fruit. The fruit was fermented in temperature controlled open vats. Before fermentation completed, half the must was pumped into a basket press for the juice to be separated from the skins to complete fermentation in a mixture of new and old American and French oak barriques. The wine was then barrel aged for twelve months before being blended, lightly filtered and bottled.

Been round the Ozzy vineyards 5 times now and this is by far the best for the money by far. Try it. If you like full bodied & a Grenache taste, this is the boy!

Slighltly disapointed by the lack of fruitiness usually promised by a Grenache. Nevertheless still packs a punch.

An absolute must to try, rich fruit, blackberry velvet, warm and smooth in the finish. My all time favourite. Go out and get some NOW !!....
