The swing screen presents you with a power meter on the right. Quickly stroke up and down to build power on your backswing. The meat and potatoes, though, is a U-shaped meter at screen left. (You don’t get a reverse setup for left-handed golfers). Sweep down to build power, then up and left to drive through the ball. Finish your swing slightly to the left to draw the ball left; finish on the right, and the ball will fade right. Can aiming your shot get any more intuitive than that? As we’re quickly discovering with the DS touch-screen, the answer is an emphatic No! Move the stylus left and the ball flies left; move it right, and the ball flies right. It will make you wonder how you played golf games all these years without a stylus. Judging power takes more work. After overshooting the green a few times, you’ll start to learn how to master your brute strength. Before putting, your virtual caddy will tell you exactly how many feet and inches away from the hole you should aim your shot. Unfortunately, the grid has no measurements, so exact placement is guesswork. You then tap the icon to putt -- no swing meter here. Tiger DS starts you off with an overhead view of the hole. The "Pocket Caddy" gives simple tips on playing each hole, but the advice is limited to tee shots. You have a choice of five types of swings: full, punch (low trajectory) and pitch, flop and chip approach shots. You get a full complement of clubs: three woods, six irons, three wedges and a putter. As with most golf games, Tiger DS defaults to a decent choice of club and direction. As you progress, though, you’ll develop your own unique style of play, building confidence in your pick of clubs and approach. The graphics do an excellent job of conveying course contours. Landscape objects are simple but serviceable 2-D models. Animations are fluid and the developers even managed to cram in some crazy Bullet Time animations of tee shots. You start off able to play Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. Not bad for a pair of starting courses. As you proceed, you’ll be able to unlock Emerald Dragon near Mt. Fuji, Japan; Kapalua, Hawaii; Sawgrass, Florida; and Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, which is famous for a floating green. You can set green and fairway speeds, rough lengths, pin placement and tee position. On Quick Play mode, you can choose from among stroke play, match play and skins. Features The heart of the game, though, is the Legend Tour, in which your golfer proves his stuff in dozens of increasingly tough Rookie, Pro and Legend challenges. First, though, you’ll want to customize your golfer’s build, hairstyle, face, head size and wardrobe. Tiger DS lets you change your golfer’s appearance at any time, which is a nice option for when you get tired of that magenta mohawk. In the first round, your guy (you can’t create a female golfer, alas) goes head-to-head with Justin Rose on Pebble Beach. Other unlocked golfers at game’s start include Tiger and Adam Scott. As you do well on the tour, you can unlock current stars and legends, including Retief Goosen, Vijay Singh, Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. Each golfer is rated in nine categories: Power Power Boost (i.e., a more powerful backswing) Drive Accuracy Ball Striking (improved iron accuracy) Approach (improved accuracy of chip and pitch shots) Putting Recovery (improved accuracy from sand and rough) Spin Luck Naturally, your rookie starts off at the bottom in all categories. Fear not, though. Even if you don’t win a Legends challenge, you’ll still earn cash for particularly good shots (for example, $500 for landing the ball near the pin). Take your earnings and buy upgrades. You’ll find it most economical to upgrade all attributes evenly. Judging from the number of hanging putts, though, luck may be the most valuable attribute of all. Swing meter makes great use of touch-screen Legends like Arnold Palmer join Tiger, Vijay Singh and other contemporary greats Pebble Beach, St. Andrews and other world-famous courses Customize your own golfer Two, three or four players can play head-to-head wirelessly
