Mango wood is one of Chiang Mai's most prolific materials which is easily grown, produces food and shelter and products!. Vases, plates, furniture and, of course, candle holders are made out of it in a unbelievable variety of shapes and colours. The reason it's so popular is that the wood is easy to find and easy to work. It's a softwood and it can be made into symmetrical shapes on a lathe. They call it turned mango wood and it allows you to make just about any shape that you could make with clay.
When we saw an opportunity to sell these beautiful items being made by local craftsmen from natural materials, whilst at the same time helping to improve standards of living we just couldn't resist!. Our supplier strongly supports small start-up companies, village co-operatives & tribal people's assistance projects. Many of the ancient tribes living in Thailand's remote mountain regions have been brutally persecuted in countries bordering Thailand, in particular along the Myanmar (formerly Burma) border, and live a precarious, often stateless, existence. These products help support and encourage local economy that benefits the community as a whole, rather then individuals.
These items use natural colouring techniques over chemical, and also use suppliers that look after the long term future of their labour force and hand made processes over mass production.
This unique combination of local skills and both local and international design has resulted in an unequalled group of exceptionally well-made, affordable and beautiful products for the home.
When you buy any of our fine Environmentally Conscious products, you are helping to improve the lives of a gifted and skilful people.
