Three films. Pather Panchali - The first part of Satyajit Ray''s great trilogy deals with the childhood of Apu, his daily life in a poor, crowded family and his dreams of going to the big city, represented by the train which passes close to his village. Aparajito - The second in Ray''s ''Apu'' trilogy finds young Apu going to the city of Benares with his mother, but returning to his village to start his education. The contrasts between town and village life parallel the growing differences between Apu and his mother - she rooted in tradition and he longing for the independence and success that learning can bring. The World Of Apu - The third of the ''Apu'' series. Now an adult living in Calcutta in an arranged marriage, Apu eventually comes to love his wife and is so bitter when she dies in childbirth that he refuses to see his son. Despite its harsh theme, the last of the trilogy ends on a note of optimism that, whatever the penalties, Apu''s dreams of education and success have come true.
