This classic style of cutlery dates from 1604. "Rat's tail" referred to the way the spoons were originally attached to the handles. Manufacturers were unable to make spoons in one piece in the 1600s, so the base was fixed to the handle with a long spine, which looks like a tail. From the Parish collection.
